Three Interview Questions for Change Management Consultants
These are some of the interview questions we ask to spot the change management consultants who can deliver:
Q1. “Tell me about a time you were accountable for delivering change. What was your scope and what outcomes did you own?”
Why it matters: Many candidates come to change management from other fields, and their change experience can vary from being formally responsible for change adoption to providing informal, off-the-side-of-their-desk change support. Both are valuable, and other aspects of work experience matter too, such as experience with key industries or project types. But you want a change consultant who has direct, hands-on experience leading change, and this often looks like a history of formal accountability.
Q2. “How do you measure success in change management?”
Why it matters: Not all change managers are held to the same expectations in their role; sometimes deliverables such as internal comms and training become the primary focus, and these have their own metrics that don't necessarily demonstrate change adoption. Showing ROI on change management is a critical skill. An effective change manager should be able to talk about how they select KPIs, ground their thinking in business value and objectives, and demonstrate accountability for outcomes - not just outputs.
Q3. “Describe a time you had to adapt a standard framework to fit a client’s culture. What did you change and why?”
Why it matters: Change practitioners are often trained on formal frameworks such as Prosci; these frameworks are valuable, but they only drive success if they're tailored to the client’s needs (not the other way around) - they can’t replace direct experience and good judgement. You want a change consultant who can pull from a versatile toolbox of approaches, adapt to circumstances, refer to their own direct experiences with change, and make their case for the approach they think will be most effective.
